If you're looking for a 60's or 70's style jacket to pair with your high waisted jeans, the pea coat was the quintessential outerwear of the time. Military jackets/trenchcoats were also very popular, with their large buttons, high necklines, and belts. Capes and shawls, also called ponchos, were very trendy, and often had interesting embellishments such as tassles or fringe.
